WhatsApp talk to text: how to send words instead of a voice note
You want to reply in WhatsApp, but tapping the microphone starts a voice note. You need words you can check before you send.
Open the chat, tap the message field and use your keyboard’s microphone. Say your reply, stop dictation, check the words, then tap Send.

How do you dictate a WhatsApp message on your phone?
Your keyboard turns speech into words in the message field. Those words stay in your draft until you tap Send.
Using Android?
With Gboard:
- Open a WhatsApp chat and tap the message field to bring up your keyboard.
- Tap the microphone at the top of Gboard. Wait for Speak now, then say your message.
- Stop dictation. Read the draft, make any changes, then tap Send when you’re ready.
On Samsung, look near the bottom edge of the screen too. The voice button may sit below the keyboard instead of in its top row.
Using an iPhone?
- Open a WhatsApp chat and tap the message field.
- Tap the microphone on the iPhone keyboard and say your message.
- Stop dictation. Check the words, make any changes, then tap Send when you’re ready.
Can’t see the keyboard mic? Go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation.
Try a draft first. Say: “Meet me at eight outside the station.” Check the time and place in the words your phone produces. Leave the message unsent for now.

How do you fix a message before you send it?
Your reply is now text you can check. If eight is too early, use the keyboard to replace “eight” with “nine” in the message field. Read the updated reply before you send it.
For punctuation, your keyboard already offers help. Supported iPhones and Pixel 6 or later with Advanced voice typing can add punctuation automatically. In Gboard, you can also say “period,” “comma” or “new line.”
That helps you get a readable draft. Now you want to say what should change and have the reply rewritten.
Can you rewrite a WhatsApp reply by voice?
Aqua Voice lets you dictate a reply, then change it by speaking. It formats your dictation. To revise the text, select it, tap Edit and say what you want to change.
For the meeting reply, your instruction could be: “Change the time to nine.” You can check the revised words before you send them.
On Android, Aqua Voice adds a small button beside your usual keyboard. You keep the layout you already know.

How do you try it with your next reply?
Start with a reply you actually need to send. On Android, use Aqua Voice’s button beside your familiar keyboard. On iPhone, enable the Aqua Voice keyboard, allow Full Access and microphone access, then switch to it with the globe key.
On iPhone, Aqua Voice may open its app to start a microphone session. Once the session starts, dictate from the Aqua Voice keyboard in WhatsApp.
Leave yourself one change to make. Dictate the reply, select the text, tap Edit and say what to change. Read the result before tapping Send.
