Voice Typing in WhatsApp: Dictate Text Instead of Voice Notes
WhatsApp has no dictation of its own. The microphone that types belongs to your keyboard, and that is why the same trick works in WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and every other app on the phone. You speak, the words land in the message box as ordinary text, and you send them like anything you typed.
- Tap the message field so the keyboard appears, tap the microphone on the keyboard, and talk. The words are typed into the chat box.
- The microphone inside WhatsApp, next to the message bar, is a different button: it records a voice note instead of writing text.
- Built-in dictation writes the words and leaves the formatting to you. Say "period", "comma" and "new paragraph" out loud, or use a tool that punctuates by itself.
- Because the microphone belongs to the keyboard, the same steps work in Telegram, Instagram, email and notes. There is nothing to set up per app.
Voice notes versus dictated text
It helps to separate two things people call "voice" in WhatsApp. A voice note is an audio recording the recipient plays back. Dictation converts your speech into typed text in the message field, so what arrives is a normal written message. Searches like "dictate a WhatsApp message" and "use dictation to type in WhatsApp" are about the second one. Dictated text is easier to skim, quote and reply to, and it spares the other person from listening to a long recording. That is why many people who dislike sending voice notes still want to speak their messages: they simply want the result to be readable text.
There is a third thing that gets mixed into the same searches, and it is not on this page. Turning a voice note somebody sent you into text is transcription, a different job done by different tools; our transcription tools page covers those. Dictating with the keyboard microphone
The quickest route uses the microphone already on your keyboard, and it needs no extra app.
- Open the WhatsApp chat and tap the message field so the keyboard comes up.
- Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard. On Gboard it sits at the right of the top row; on the Samsung keyboard it is in the bottom left corner of the keyboard.
- Allow the microphone permission the first time you are asked, wait for "Speak now", and talk at your normal pace.
- Speak the punctuation as you go: "period", "comma", "question mark", "new line". Built-in dictation does not add it for you unless you are on a Pixel 6 or newer.
- Read the line before you send it. A misheard name or number is the one mistake dictation hides well.

When there is no microphone on the keyboard
If the microphone icon is missing, greyed out, or dictation dies after one word, the fault is in the keyboard or in the phone's permissions, not in WhatsApp. Two switches block it before your keyboard even sees it: the phone-wide Microphone access tile in Quick Settings, and the microphone permission of the keyboard app itself. One WhatsApp-specific case is worth separating. If WhatsApp refuses to record voice notes but keyboard dictation works fine, that is WhatsApp's own microphone permission in Settings, Apps, and a separate problem from dictation.
One keyboard, every messenger
A keyboard or a dictation overlay types into the standard Android input field. Any app that shows you a text field gets the same dictation, with no separate trick and no per-app setting. That is the useful part of the answer: you fix dictation once, on the keyboard, and it works in WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Signal, email, notes and the browser at the same time. It also means that when dictation misbehaves in every app at once, the keyboard is the place to look, and when it misbehaves in exactly one app, that app is doing something of its own with the microphone.
Voice typing in Telegram
Telegram works the same way, and the same confusion is built into its interface. The microphone at the edge of the message bar is Telegram's own recorder: holding it records a voice message, which is audio, not text. To dictate instead, tap the message field first so the keyboard appears, then tap the microphone on the keyboard, and the words are typed into the box where you would have typed them.
Everything in Telegram that accepts text accepts dictation for the same reason: a reply in a group, a caption you add to a photo before sending it, a note to yourself in Saved Messages, a post in a channel you run. If you dictate long messages there, the formatting problem is bigger than in a chat, because a channel post without paragraphs is hard to read. Say "new paragraph" where you would press Enter, or use a tool that formats the finished sentence for you.
Voice typing in Instagram
Instagram has no dictation of its own either, and it does not need one. Anywhere the app shows a text field, the keyboard microphone works: a direct message, a comment under a post, the caption you write before publishing. Tap the field, tap the microphone on the keyboard, speak.
Two habits make dictated Instagram text look typed rather than transcribed. Captions and comments live without punctuation more often than chat messages do, so decide once whether you are speaking the marks or letting a tool add them, and stay consistent. And hashtags are worth typing by hand: dictation writes the word, not the symbol, so "hashtag" arrives as a word in the middle of your caption.
