How to Voice Type on Android

There are three ways to voice type on Android: use the built-in system dictation, tap the microphone on Gboard, or install a dedicated voice keyboard. The first two use tools already on your phone, while a separate keyboard gives you cleaner, ready-to-send text with punctuation already in place.

Method 1: the built-in Gboard microphone

If you use Gboard, voice typing is already built in and needs no extra app. It is the fastest way to start, though it transcribes words literally and leaves formatting to you.

1. Open any app with a text field, such as messages or notes.
2. Tap the field so the keyboard appears.
3. Tap and hold, or tap, the microphone icon on Gboard.
4. Grant microphone permission the first time you are asked.
5. Speak clearly, then tap the microphone again to stop.

Method 2: Samsung keyboard and system dictation

Samsung phones ship with their own keyboard, and the steps differ slightly. The idea is the same: find the microphone on the keyboard toolbar, or enable voice input in the keyboard settings, then dictate. On some devices you first turn on the voice input key in Settings before it appears on the toolbar.
