Voice Typing Punctuation and Capitalization on Android

Many mobile keyboards drop periods, skip commas, and leave new sentences in lowercase, so you end up fixing every dictated message by hand. This guide explains why built-in dictation gets formatting wrong, which punctuation settings and voice commands your phone actually has, and what to do when it has none of them.

Why voice typing gets punctuation wrong

Plain speech to text does one job: turn sounds into words. A full stop is not a sound, so something has to decide where it belongs. Either you say it out loud, or a second layer of the engine infers it from your pauses and intonation. That second layer is missing on most phones and covers only a handful of languages, which is why the same feature looks broken on one device and flawless on another.

The version of this that drives people to support forums is the engine hearing the word and writing the word. It has a long paper trail. In February 2022 an Android Community user with a Samsung A71 on Android 11 reported that the assistant was "spelling every punctuation mark I request instead of putting the actual punctuation mark there", had been for months, and said the same thing had recurred for years across phones from several manufacturers (Android Community). Two months later a separate thread described the same thing arriving on a single day, 27 March, after years of the Gboard microphone working normally (Android Community). In August 2024 it reached the Google Messages forum in one flat sentence: "When using voice to text, Google Messages does not recognize punctuation words. Instead of placing the appropriate punctuation mark, it types out the word." (Google Messages Community).

Google states the constraint in one line in the Gboard help: "Punctuation might not be available in all languages" (Type with your voice). That is the usual explanation for a sudden overnight change. Nothing broke; the recognition language moved, and punctuation support moves with it rather than with your keyboard layout.

Which voice typing your phone has

Before changing any setting, find your row in the table below. These are not variations of one feature. They are four different products sitting behind the same microphone button, and only two of them punctuate on their own.

Two details matter if you care where your voice goes. Google says text dictated with advanced voice typing stays on the device, except when you use "Fix it" or the detailed edit commands (Gboard Help). The punctuation words Gboard understands

Google's published list is short, and it is the same list on every Android phone with Gboard.

Colons, semicolons, quotation marks and dashes are not on that list. They work on some devices and languages and fail silently on others, so do not build a habit around them. Your own phone can tell you the truth: open the voice toolbar, tap the menu or the language abbreviation, and tap "Show voice commands" to see what your device and language support today.

On a Pixel 6 or newer, advanced voice typing adds editing commands to the same session: "Delete last word", "Clear" for the last sentence, "Clear all", "Send", "Stop", and "Next" to jump to the following field in a form. Pixel 8 and later, in US English only, go further and let you edit punctuation and casing after the fact with "Change apples to oranges", "Delete nearby", "Insert Anna after Emily", "Capitalize coach" and "Spell Christine as C-H-R-I-S-T-Y-N-E". Google's instruction there is easy to miss and it is the reason most people think the commands do not work: pause for at least half a second before you say one, and keep the cursor within a sentence or two of the words you are editing.

When your phone types the word instead of the mark

Work through these in order. The first two account for most cases.

1. Check the voice typing language, not the keyboard language. In Gboard, open Settings, then Voice typing, and look at the languages listed there. Punctuation support follows the recognition language, and switching a locale variant is enough to lose it.
2. Decide who is doing the punctuation. If automatic punctuation is on and you also speak the marks, you get both, which reads worse than neither. On a Pixel, the switch is Settings, Voice typing, Auto punctuation.
3. Leave half a second of silence before the word. Said inside the flow of a sentence, "comma" is just another word, and the engine is right to type it.
4. On a Galaxy, change the engine. Settings, General management, Samsung Keyboard settings, Voice input, then Google Voice Typing. Samsung's own documentation confirms there are two voice-to-text apps on the phone and that Samsung voice input only exists inside the Samsung keyboard (Samsung Support).
5. Give the speech models a chance to download. Google's troubleshooting for advanced voice typing is unglamorous and worth doing in that order: connect to Wi-Fi, restart the phone, then leave it charging overnight. The download runs in the background and can take hours.

Capitalization is a separate setting

People assume capitals come with punctuation. They do not, and the complaints about them are older and louder. In February 2025 a Google Docs Editors Community post put it this way: voice typing "usually does a great job of discerning what words I'm saying, but the capitalization is completely broken. It does not capitalize the first word in a sentence, it often capitalizes random words, and it frequently does not capitalize proper nouns like names of cities." (Google Docs Editors Community). Here is what genuinely exists. Gboard has an Auto-capitalization switch under Settings, then Text correction, and Google's own troubleshooting page tells you to turn it off if it makes unwanted changes (Fix problems with Gboard). On the Samsung keyboard the equivalent lives under Smart typing, More typing options, as Auto capitalize. Both of these are typing settings, and dictated text does not always pass through them, which is exactly the gap people keep reporting. On a Pixel 8 or later in US English you can repair a specific word afterwards by saying "Capitalize" and the word. Everything else is manual.
